Native American Life Now...and Then In-Person

The Chickahominy Tribe's Cultural Department, "Cultural Exchange", includes bringing a display of artifacts and tools, as well as an explanation of how they would have been used in the past and how they could still be used today. Educators will talk about what the typical day would look like for the members of Powhatan village prior to European contact (pre-1607). Educators are members of the Chickahominy Tribe and will cover their tribe's history, specifically from 1607 to now. There will also be a dance presentation, in full regalia, and an overview of the dance style and significance of the regalia and clothing worn. They will cover powwow etiquette, "the do's and don'ts". The tribal members will help people understand that Native people are still living here in the area. They have adapted to society and are a part of their community--not just figures in history books or television shows.
